The Sacrifice

"The Golden Kingdom produces and exports some of the finest silks in the known world. Ropes woven from it can not be cut by any common mean and the maximum weight they can withstand are a dozen tons per strand. Yet the material produced from it is as light and soft as the gentle summer breeze.  No silk or fabric from any other location has ever come close to matching the versatility and the beauty of silks of the Golden Kingdom.

For centuries how it was produced was a jealously guarded secret. And for good reason. For all the wealth and prosperity it it bings to the land, its production calls for a heavy toll. The Dhahabu Jua, or the Golden Sun Spider Is the source of this miraculous fabric, and in turn the country's wealth.  The Golden Sun spider can grow to be as large as water buffalo and come in bright tropical colors ranging from purples and golds as rich as any sunset, to deep jewel blues and whites that rival the waves off the kingdom's coastal shores. There are so few of these amazing creatures left that it is believed that the ones in captivity within the Golden Kingdom are likely the last in existence. They are kept in large domes of woven branches with walls built of silk fabric of the spiders own making. And their care and feeding are not so simple, especially when its primary food source are the very people caring for it.

Once, long ago the Dhahabu Jua were worshiped as gods. And like with any properly worshiped god, sacrifices were its due. While these days the motivations driving the continuation of this practice are more financial than spiritual, the rights and traditions are still upheld on the regular. And when Dhahabu Jua needs to be fed, who are the people of the Golden Kingdom to keep a god waiting."
